Baylee- Mama + Me

Baylee is a mama of two and creator of the website Mama + Me. As an  entrepreneur in Byron Bay she wanted both a successful business and happy children, so created a space to make it easier for other Mamas in a similar situation.

Mama + Me is a community of like-minded, passionate mums who support each other, challenge each other and share resources.

As a mother, what's an activity you choose for your children to keep fit?

We go to the park once a week after school, the beach once or twice on weekends and out to my mums farm most weekends as well. She has lots of space and plenty of farm work for the kids to do. They feed all the animals, climb trees, go on bush walks, pull weeds etc. it tires them out big time! We also love to go for rides on the skateboards and bikes and swimming at the pool.

If your children could choose dinner, what would it be? What would your healthy choice for dinner be?

I just asked Preston and he said 'leftover rice, carrots & cucumbers'   I have strange children that will actually eat anything. They mostly love frozen berries, crackers and cans of spaghetti. If I'm cooking we'll eat fish, stir fried veggies and rice because I have lots of food intolerance's & that's pretty much all I can eat at the moment but if my hubby is cooking he'll make spag bol or steak and salad for him and the boys.

What's something you think is important towards supporting a child's emotional development?

I think parenting is such a juggling act. I'm constantly trying to make sure my children feel valued so I listen to them intently and meet their needs but I also try to teach them patience and empathy for other people's needs. I always encourage my boys to speak up and talk about how they are feeling.

Every night at dinner we talk about each other's days and bring up any issues that may have come up at school. We cuddle a lot and say 'I love you' a lot. We also try to make sure everyone gets enough sleep or rest at least. Preston is right on the cusp of no longer needing a nap but we still encourage him to lay down and listen to an audio book for an hour or so just to bring his heart rate down and help him process his emotions. Otherwise things go a bit pear shaped.

How important do you feel it's been having a tribe of like minded parents in helping your own journey as a mother?

Absolutely crucial. Its like a make or break thing. I say this to every one of my friends when they say they want to have kids 'make sure you have a super strong support network before you even go there'. I am super lucky to have a really supportive family but they're all a bit spread out so it can be isolating at times.

I think it's super important to surround yourself with like minded people especially. Not just attending a mums group & saying 'you have kids, I have kids, let's be friends!' Although that can be a great way to make new friends it's even more important to talk about deeper things than your child's bowel movements and sleep routines.

For my own emotional health and stability I've had to really go out of my comfort zone and be my full self in these situations not just a mum. To talk about my dreams and passions to others is super empowering and I've actually started making some really awesome friends who share my entrepreneurial passion and my struggles as a mum.

Best parenting tip for Healthy Fit Kids you can pass on?

To love yourself and to teach your kids that they are loved regardless of what they do. I think that so often we get so focused on what other people think and trying to please everyone and that's where guilty, unhealthy habits lie. Then it becomes an unhealthy cycle of feeling unloved and not loving ourselves fully so not looking after yourself. But we can always turn it around by loving ourselves first and foremost.
