Joshua Straub

Joshua Straub, PhD, is an author, speaker, family advocate and professor of child psychology. He currently speaks and writes on emotionally safe parents and spouses and the influence of technology on today‚Äôs family. I am a massive fan of Joshua's and know you will all find him as inspirational as I do. Josh has two beautiful children and is married to Christi, who is also an amazing talented mama.

His new book is "Safe House" and I highly recommend it. I have gained so much gold from reading this book.

As a father, what's an activity you choose for your kids to keep fit?
WITH OUR KIDDOS ONLY 19 MONTHS AND 3 1/2 YEARS, WE JUST LET THEM LOOSE IN THE BACKYARD AND AT THE PARK. FORTUNATELY, OUR BACKYARD IS FENCED IN, SO THEY HAVE A SAFE BUT FAIRLY LARGE AREA TO RUN IN AND PLAY.

RECENTLY THOUGH, CHRISTI WAS OUT OF TOWN FOR FOUR DAYS AT A CONFERENCE. I HAD BOTH KIDS BY MYSELF. WE WOKE UP ONE MORNING AND I SAID TO MY 3 1/2 YEAR OLD, "SO, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO TODAY?" BEING SILLY, I JUST THREW IT OUT THERE IN A VOICE HE FOUND SILLY, "DO YOU WANT TO FLY A KITE?" HIS EYES LIT UP! WE WENT TO THE STORE AND BOUGHT A KITE. HE SPRINTED BACK AND FORTH IN THE YARD MORE THAN A SPRINTER TRAINING FOR THE OLYMPICS. HE HAD A BLAST. AND HE SLEPT LIKE A DREAM. IT WAS THE BEST $1.65 I SPENT IN A LONG TIME!

WE ALSO LOVE TO GO FOR WALKS AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND SWIM AT OUR LOCAL REC CENTER. AT HOME, WE WRESTLE IN PILLOWS AND PLAY "SIMON SAYS." BOTH RESULT IN GREAT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

If your children could choose dinner, what would it be?

OUR SON WOULD CHOOSE A PEANUT BUTTER AND HONEY SANDWICH, NO QUESTION. OUR DAUGHTER WOULD LIKELY CHOOSE ANYTHING WITH DIP. SHE IS A GOOD EATER FOR 19 MONTHS, AS LONG AS THERE IS SOME TYPE OF SALAD DRESSING, AKA. "DIP."

What do you think is most important towards supporting a child's emotional

development?

ONE WORD: UNDERSTANDING. IN THE BOOK SAFE HOUSE, I WRITE THAT THE GOLDEN RULE FOR EMOTIONALLY SAFE PARENTS IS: "IN ORDER TO BE UNDERSTOOD, WE MUST FIRST UNDERSTAND." OFTEN TIMES, WHEN OUR CHILDREN ARE DEFIANT OR THROWING A TANTRUM, THEY HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON UNDERNEATH THE BEHAVIOR THAT ISN'T DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE BEHAVIOR.

FOR INSTANCE, WHEN OUR CHILDREN BEGIN GETTING RESTLESS OR ACTING OUT, WE IMMEDIATELY CONSIDER HOW LONG IT'S BEEN SINCE THEY LAST HAD ANYTHING TO EAT. OFTEN, BLOOD SUGAR OR A LACK OF SLEEP IS AT FAULT. IT COULD ALSO BE RELATED TO COGNITIVE SKILL DEFICITS OR TEMPERAMENT. KNOWING EACH OF OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR UNIQUE WAYS OF RELATING AND PERSONALITIES IS CRITICAL TO UNDERSTANDING THE UNDERLYING MOTIVATION BEHIND WHY THEY'RE ACTING OR MAKING THE DECISIONS THEY ARE.

ONE LAST THOUGHT ON THIS: OUR ABILITY TO KNOW OUR OWN STORY MATTERS. PROVERBS 14:29 SAYS THAT "WHOEVER IS SLOW TO ANGER HAS GREAT UNDERSTANDING." THE MORE PROVOKED WE ARE BY OUR CHILDREN'S BEHAVIOR, THE MORE WE REACT OUT OF ANGER RATHER THAN RESPONDING IN AN UNDERSTANDING WAY. IF WE'RE PROVOKED RATHER EASILY AND OFTEN, IT'S LIKELY BECAUSE OF AN UNRESOLVED ISSUE IN OUR OWN STORY.

What's your best tip for parents to really keep connected with their children?

BECOME A STUDENT OF YOUR CHILD'S INTERESTS. I RECENTLY TALKED WITH A MOM WHOSE 13-YEAR-OLD SON WAS LEARNING TO RAP. SHE HATED RAP MUSIC AND CAME TO ME DISTRAUGHT AT THE THOUGHT OF HER SON LEARNING THE ART OF RAPPING AND HANGING WITH FRIENDS WHO LOVE IT TOO. MY ADVICE TO HER: LEARN TO RAP. THE MORE WE PURSUE OUR CHILDREN'S HEARTS AND INTERESTS, THE MORE CONNECTED WE'LL REMAIN TO THEM.

Best parenting tip for Healthy Fit Kids you can pass on?

OUR ABILITY TO PARENT WELL STEMS FROM OUR ABILITY TO LOVE WELL. AND OUR ABILITY TO LOVE WELL STEMS FROM THE LOVE AND CARE WE'RE RECEIVING FROM GOD FIRST, AND A LIFE-GIVING COMMUNITY SECOND. TO TEACH OUR KIDS TO LOVE GOD AND LOVE OTHERS IS TO BE CONNECTED TO A LIFE-GIVING COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING JUST THAT. WE WEREN'T DESIGNED TO PARENT IN A VACUUM.
